The Temple Micah Library: A User's Guide

Temple Micah Library is an evolving and functioning lending library of more than 5,000 volumes, including a considerable reference collection and annual subscriptions to some two dozen journals (including Lillith and Biblical Archaeology Review), three newspapers and a growing media collection of DVDs, videos and music. Much of the collection was lovingly and carefully put together by Margaret Grotte who was the librarian for some ten years. Carol Sweig is our current librarian who is delighted to have the professional assistance of Rhoda Hyde. Questions about the library can be directed to either of them.

Where Do I Go? The library occupies the space at the kitchen end of the downstairs social hall. There are a number of stacks, as well as some tables and comfortable chairs for browsers. The periodicals are displayed at the end of the stacks facing the social hall, and you will find the library's catalog in a large binder on the desk. There is usually a cart upstairs in the lobby displaying new books for borrowing.

What's in the Collection? The library is an eclectic assemblage including non-fiction, with substantial holdings in European and American Jewish history, Holocaust literature, and books on Biblical and Talmudic subjects. There is a large section devoted to fiction of Jewish interest or by Jewish authors. We have more than 100 biographies of Jews, as well. There are books on the Jewish "life cycle," and a growing collection for children. In addition, the library contains many non-circulating reference works.

How Do I Borrow a Book? Each circulating book contains a pocket in the back with a card. Please record the date and your name, writing legibly. Leave the card in the front of the small box on the desk. There are no firm due dates, but please return borrowed books as soon as you've finished with them.

May I Donate Books? Book and media donations are welcome at any time. New and appropriate materials will be added to the collection. A Wish List is posted on the library's bulletin board and will also be available onlne. Members are asked to donate at least one book each year. The Temple has dedication bookplates to place in books upon request. Our annual Book Fair at Politics and Prose is a great place to shop for a donation. Currently, the library needs more titles in Jewish fiction, older children's books, and poetry by Jewish authors. Also, we are eager to receive books on any subject written by Temple Micah members. The library has no use for textbooks, well-used, small print paperbacks, religious school primers or prayer books of any kind. We are happy to receive any other books of Jewish interest; however, we will not keep duplicates. Instead, we'll offer those to the congregation as "free".
